The following list of resources are available on loan for use in your small group. Contact Ellen Wild if you wish to borrow any of them.
Nooma Series (Rob Bell) 15 separate DVDs of different topics including ‘luggage’ (forgiving others), ‘rain’ (pain & suffering) and ‘noise’ (hearing God). 10-15 minutes of thought provoking film throwing up issues for discussion.Ideal for mature Christians, new Christians and those searching into the Christian faith.
Ephesians from New Wine (Andy Hickford) Five sessions worsking through the book of Ephesians. Andy Hickford is a great Bible teacher and easy to listen to. Each talk is approximately 40mins.
God is closer than you think (John Ortberg) Six sessions on experiencing the presence of God in the complexity of life. Sessions include ‘where is God in my world?’ and ‘listening to the voice of God’. The sessions are accompanied by a participant’s guide. The DVD teaching is 15-20mins broken up with questions for personal and group discussion.
A walk on the wild side - Jonah (Jeff Lucas)This series is four sessions long. Jeff Lucas works through each chapter of Jonah in a short DVD clip with titles such as ‘life after failure’ and ‘trusting through anger and disappointment’. The accompanying booklet has ideas for icebreakers and questions for group discussion. There are also daily readings for those that want it.
The Alpha Course (Nicky Gumbel) This is the famous 10 session Alpha Course - looking into the basics of Christianity, with 40 minute talks.
10+ Ten Commandments (J.John) This series on the 10 commandments can be studied in 10 or 20 sessions. It includes leaders notes, discussion ideas and practical suggestions. The Small Group HOST can pick or choose the most relevant bits.
Revelation: Experience God’s Power (John Ortberg) This six session series unpacks some of the key themes of the book of Revelation in an accessible and practical way. Sessions include ‘Understanding the images and language of Revelation’, ‘God is on the throne’ and ‘what will heaven be like?’.
Mark 9-16: The Servant King This is a seven session series. The second half of Mark’s Gospel is about Jesus the King who came to serve and suffer. These studies point us to this Jesus. The sessions include; ‘the example of the king’, ‘the coming of the King’, and ‘the abandoned King’. The material has a ‘talk about’, an ‘investigate’, and an ‘apply’ section.
1 Corinthians: The Challenges of life together This is 13 sessions working through 1 Corinthians chapter by chapter including ‘Called in Christ (1 Cor 1), ‘Servants of Christ’ (1 Cor 4) and ‘Living for Christ’ (1 Cor 8-9). This series provides good background material to 1 Corinthians and good themes. You may not want ot use all the discussion questions - pick and choose what suits your group.
Revelation 1-3: Letters to the Churches (Spring Harvest Workbook) This is an eight session workbook with a leader’s guide at the back. Each session contains aims, Bible passages to study, questions, activities and discussion ideas. It’s very accessible. Titles include ‘How alive are you?’, ‘Beyond these walls’, and ‘No compromise’.
The Beatitudes: Developing Spiritual Character (John Stott) This is eight sessions looking at the character traits that Jesus highlights for Christians: meekness, mercy, pure in heart etc. Pick and choose which questions will work with your group.
God’s Big Picture (Vaughan Roberts) This eight chaptered book is n overview of the whole Bible and how it fits together under the theme of the Kingdom of God. Group members read a chapter and then come ready to discuss. Some discussion questions are provided in the book itself.
Lifebuilder Series These Bible study guides are less contemporary, but have some good background information to use. Books include Galatians, Joshua, Hebrews, Isaiah, Ephesians, Daniel and Psalms.
Act Justly (Christian Aid) These six sessions explore issues of injustice biblically and encourage us to take action. Including topics such as ‘A call to act justly’, ‘Fair trade’ and ‘An ethical Lifestyle’. The notes give ideas for worship, a Bible focus, and a response activity suggestion.
Material for New Christians, or those interested in Christianity
A Life Worth Living (Nicky Gumbel) Follow up to the Alpha Course, based on Paul’s letter to the Philippians. Through each of the nine sessions group members read a chapter of the book and then discuss it together. Discussion questions are provided at the back of the book.
Eyewitness Reports of Jesus Each of these six sessions for seekers is a discussion weighing the evidence for and against the Jesus of the Bible. Includes ‘Credible Sources’, ‘Reason, faith & miracles’, and ‘Final proof’. Good discussion questions, accessible layout and a leader’s guide.
Foundations: Introducing the essentials of Christian Living These are seven sessions looking at the foundations of the Christian life, including ‘A new Creation’, ‘Kingdom Life’ and ‘The Church’.
